| we are a month further now, and the Euro is coming tomorrow. this last month was quite a hectic one, moneywise. one had to get rid of cash money as much as possible, but on the other hand, at the end of the year you get all the money back you lent people, and of course the collegue who drives to work with me and is allways late in paying payed in time now, with old money. luckily one can still use it for another 4 weeks, though not everywhere. as expected my coupon for the ¿-coinkit was stolen from my mailbox, so I shall have to go without. at least I know that the thief did not get very far with it, as one has to show an identity card in order to get the money, with the name identically to the name on the coupon. anyway, in less than 24 hours one can go to the teller machine to get far more than those few coins. here in the Netherlands it is only banks and shops who do the transition during the coming night, most fuel stations have already changed everything except the cash money. during the whole month I filled up using my easypay key hanger, and there was not a Guilder involved. that means there is no reason for filling up today just in case something goes wrong. still something must go wrong in a huge transition in a chaotic city like Amsterdam, where many people do not speak the language, let alone read and write Dutch. we shall wait and see. the only precaution I take from now is that I do not visit teller machines in Amsterdam. that is not very difficult for me, as I spend New Years Eve with my mother on the countryside and get cash money there tomorrow. in Amsterdam they have an extra police team just to handle the plus in robberies. that shall not change the world, as Amsterdam Police is very understaffed and they also have to handle the Royal Wedding on February 2nd. several elderly people I know of get their money at the small post office in the Academic Hospital nearby, and the more mobile leave town for it, at least for the first few weeks. more positive news to close with is that fuel stations and larger supermarkets in the United Kingdom shall accept both £ and ¿ from tomorrow. this may be the beginning of UK joining in, and if they do, Denmark (and perhaps Sweden) may follow soon. so much for predictions at this moment. part 3 (the last) shall be coming in 3 or 4 weeks from now |
