as I write this, the first day on which the shops are open and have to accept the Euro as a currency is only 1 more month away. once it is all functioning it shall be a huge improvement for people like me, who do a lot of travelling through Europe by car, and for the others it shall not be such a problem either, once we are through the transition period, but before that...
this is supposed to be the first of a series of short essays about my personal experience during the transition periode. I write this partly to gather reactions from other readers, and partly for later. in the Metrolis forum one can read entries from years back, and many people read them for nostalgic reasons, so we should write something down here too, so we can laugh about it later, in 2005 or so.
the latest survey here in Amsterdam says that, in spite of an overkill of information, many shopkeepers, especially immigrants, hardly know what is coming up to them. many consumers do not know much more. bars and so shamelessly raised the prices to make them round figures, while on vending machines the Euro-price is often so exact that one fears the worst for availiability of coins, especially during the first months.
some coins must be there, as in the coming week all Dutch citizens over the age of 6 receive a coupon in the mail, and instructions on where they can get a set of Euro-coins. just wonder if people in our block actually receive the coupon, or that we just have some more mailbox-burglaries? the latter is more likely, knowing Amsterdam. if we actually receive the coins we are able to spend them at Free Record Shop before the end of the year. this is not legal, but authorities shall not do anything against it
so much for this week, part 2 is coming soon |
