The chattiquette is the etiquette of chatters on the Internet worldwide. It contains information on how you should behave in a chat and what you can expect of others.
1. Show respect for your fellow chatters. If anyone doesn't respect you, just ignore them, rather than discussing with them. Other chatters might get irritated. Try to avoid bad language (like 4-letter words etc.) or anything that could provoke people.
2. Should anyone spread extremist thoughts of any kind or badly insult other chatters, write a mail to trouble@neuropeans.com. Such behaviour is not tolerated on Neuropeans. Since we can't control everything ourselves, we're dependent on your help.
3. When you enter a chat room, try to get the atmosphere of the chat and the spirit of the people before you kick off. In case the room is not your scene, just change channels.
4. Remember that you're not anonymous. Every chat server is able to find out your IP (your computer's address), and most of them save all visitors in a file. Your IP address leads to your internet provider, who in turn is informed about your personal details.
5. Remember also that a chat is not really private. A lot of chat programmes are data-based. That means that all your messages can (but don't have to) be tracked.
6. If you want to talk to a certain person, address him or her directly. Messages that are not addressed to anyone, may remain unanswered. If you do talk to someone directly, they will most certainly react (except they have a good reason not to).
7. When you reply to someone's message, be polite.
8. Apply bold type or CAPS only for emphasis, not to the whole sentence… This can be really irritating.
9. If you've got a question, ask - but do it politely … most chatters will reply in the same way. And if your questions are too private, they will let you know in a friendly manner. Questions are a good way of starting a talk. Most chatters will readily help "newbies".
10. If anyone barges into your conversation and is being offensive, simply ignore the guy. Getting upset just makes him or her go on. If he realizes that nobody reacts to his insults, he'll soon get bored and stop. If the person is really bothering you, write an e-mail to the respective chat admin who will be able to take measures. (also see no. 3 above)
11. If anyone doesn't want to tell you their e-mail address, just take it easy … you probably wouldn't want to tell everyone your own or a friend's phone number, would you?
